SENAD Community Coventry Celebrate CQC Success

Registered Manager of SENAD Community’s Coventry branch, Laura Ward organised a celebratory/thankyou lunch after the service was rated Outstanding by the CQC in their recent inspection. The lunch was attended by both staff and service users. Everyone had a great time and some of our lovely service users felt they wanted to be involved and contribute to the food, so baked a cake, which went down tremendously.

Bladon Students Hit the Big Smoke

On 26th June 2018, nine students from Bladon House School descended on London for a two night residential trip taking in restaurants, a show and lots of busy tourist hot spots. The trip was jam packed with new experiences which for students with Autism is very challenging. The students visited Shrek’s adventure, Sea-Life Centre, street theatre on Southbank, three course dinner at Pizza Express and everyone’s favourite– a trip to Tesco Express! As well as two trains, two tubes and two bus rides, all on day one!

We shared bedrooms, bathrooms, lounges and living areas across the second floor of a Victorian pub in Lambeth. After a delicious, fine dining experience delivered to our door courtesy of a McDonalds breakfast we were on our way again visiting the Imperial War Museum, Trafalgar Square, Tesco Express again, toilet stop in the National Portrait Gallery, Leicester Square, M and M world, Lunch in Pret a Manger and Covent Garden.

Finally at 2.30pm on Wednesday it was time for The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre! And what a performance it was, fully enjoyed by everybody. And we weren’t done there, a quick walk through Chinatown and we arrive at the Rainforest Café for dinner, eating amongst gorillas, leopards, snakes and tropical fish with a half hourly thunderstorm right above our heads. After one more trip to Tesco Express (again!) we travelled back on the underground to our flat. Exhausted, hot, tired and full of food we collapsed early into our beds and slept the night away before returning to school on Thursday.

All Aboard for Rowden Students

A group on young people chose to participate in a canal boat trip on Wednesday 11th April, hosted by the wonderful Willow Trust staff at Saul Junction, on the Gloucester to Sharpness canal.

Five boats arrived on time and students cruised off toward Purton for a picnic, then returning after three hours on the canal. All residents took the opportunity to steer the Leonard Matchan, guided by John, the captain.

Thanks to the staff who came in especially to enable the trip to happen

We have another trip booked in August.

Coventry domiciliary care agency rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission

Coventry domiciliary care agency rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission

The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Senad Community Ltd- Coventry, to be Outstanding following an inspection in January.

Senad Community Ltd- Coventry provides personal care to people living in their own homes in the community. It provides a service to older people and younger adults with dementia, physical disabilities, mental health needs or learning disabilities or an autistic spectrum disorder. The service provides both a home care and support service and a live-in care service.

Inspectors found staff were caring and compassionate and people were being provided with safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led care. A full inspection report has been published on CQC’s website: http://www.cqc.org.uk/location/1-3031372188

Under CQC’s programme of inspections, all adult social care services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Senad Community Ltd- Coventry is rated Outstanding for being safe and well-led, and Good for being caring, responsive and effective.

Maggie Hannelly, CQC’s Head of Inspection for Adult Social Care in the central region said:

“Our inspection team were really impressed by the level of care and support offered to people at Senad Community Ltd- Coventry, which we found gave them an enhanced sense of quality of life and well-being.

“People were extremely satisfied with the quality of the service they received. The registered manager provided clear leadership to the staff team and was valued by people, staff and the provider.

“There was a positive culture and the provider’s value system placed people at the heart of the service. There was a whole team culture whose focus was on how could they do things better for people.

“People consistently told us staff were well trained. Staff underwent a rigorous induction programme prior to providing people’s care. The dignity care staff champion shared their learning with peers.

“The registered manager had used innovative and creative ways of training and developing staff that enabled them to apply their learning in their practice in order to deliver outstanding care for people.

“There was a strong emphasis on the importance of people eating and drinking well. The provider’s utilisation of an electronic recording system meant they could very effectively monitor if people had received their required support with eating and drinking. Any issues were picked up promptly through the system and fed back to the office staff to record.

“All of this meant people received a high standard of care, which is why it has been rated Outstanding.”

Andrea Sutcliffe, Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said:

“The quality of care which our inspectors found here was exceptional and I am very pleased that we can celebrate the service’s achievements.

“An outstanding service is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and commitment. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved.”

Floss was born with cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user. She is a keen cyclist and it is her ambition to one day enter the Paralympics.

With our support Floss got her racing wheelchair and on Sunday she successfully completed the London Mini marathon.

Alderwasley Students Behind the Scenes of War Horse

As part of Nottingham City’s 2018 Puppet Festival, 3ZH and 3PJ recently visited Nottingham’s Theatre Royal to participate in a personalised workshop; “War Horse Page to Stage”.
Students had the unique experience of interacting with cast members from West Ends War Horse Creative and Acting Company, as well as the National Theatre’s Learning Team. Whilst there students explored some of the background principles of puppetry and the rehearsal and technical processes that have brought this magical production to life. They also had a chance to ask questions of company members at the end.

Everyone had a fantastic morning and it was great to see different class groups working together to produce some marvellous creations. The theatre company were thrilled with the participation and could not complement our students enough!
Here is what our students had to say about the day:

“We were told how to walk a horse on stage by using the 1,2,3,4 method. I enjoyed the whole day and thought it was excellent “It was fun but Puppeting is hard!

“I think it was amazing because we learnt how they do it on stage”

Scandinavia Day at Alderwasley Hall School

On 21st March students explored Scandinavia through a variety of workshops as part of our second Global Day of the year. They were virtually transported to see the magnificent landscapes of Scandinavia for themselves through a virtual reality headset. They also had the opportunity to compete against each other in a virtual snow ball fight set in Lapland.
Students made a traditional Scandinavian buffet meal called a smorgasbord. They sampled some delicious foods such as cloudberry jam made from a fruit native to Scandinavia and some less delicious fish dumplings.

Other sessions held on the day saw students learn about the works of Hans Christian Anderson and create and share their own fairy tales while sipping alcohol-free Glogg. They designed, made and sailed a Viking raft and met a Viking who told stories about where they came from, the gods they believed in and showed them how Vikings prepared for battle. The kitchen supported the day by making a selection of Danish dishes for lunch and by decorating the canteen in the flag of Denmark.
The day was a huge success with the majority of students accessing all sessions. Students from KS1 to KS4 interacted with one another, competed against each other and shared in their learning of another culture. The feedback suggests they are very much looking forward to the next Global Day.
