SENAD Get Ramtastic with The Derby Ram Trail

We are proud sponsors of Derby Museums, Derby Ram Trail which is a spectacular free art sculpture trail coming to Derby in the summer of 2021. From 27 May to 22 August a flock of fabulously colourful and unique rams will take you on a trail around the beautiful city of Derby.

The Derby Ram Trail is being brought to the city by Derby Museums, together with Wild in Art who are a leading producer of creative events that transform places into free, family friendly outdoor art galleries.

As part of the activities around the trail, all SENAD service users have been offered the opportunity to take part in a ‘Design a Mini Ram’ competition. 160 people are taking part from across the groups services, bringing the fun of the trail across the country.

Bladon Artists Rise to the Challenge

September 2020 saw the start of the new Monthly Art at Bladon House School. The first challenge was for the EQUALS classes who were asked to create an Autumn Wreath. Classes were told of the topic at the beginning of the month and entries had to be in the main hall by 9am on the last school day of the September. The three entries looked amazing and the senior leaders had a hard time picking the winner. The winning class was Orion with their hedgehog themed wreath.  Each young person in the class received a certificate with the class keeping the art challenge trophy for a month.

October saw the three EQUALS classes competing again. This time the theme was Monsters. Classes’ imaginations ran riot and again three amazing pieces of artwork were produced. Once again the senior leaders had a difficult choice, with Orion again being the winner with their Monster Disco.

In November, the competition was opened up to all EQUALS and AIMS classes. The main hall was filled with amazing Firework themed art. Luna were the winners of the challenge with their artwork depicting many different fireworks.

December saw not just class entries but also individual pieces of art. This time the theme was Snow and artwork included 3D snowmen, Santa being pulled by snow dogs, snow globes, etc. This month we had an individual winner from Draco.

Autumn Activities at Pegasus School

Learning Through Story at Maple View

This half-term the children at Maple View School are learning about friendship and loss through the whole school text ‘Waiting For Wolf’. Fox and Wolf spend all their days together, talking and laughing, swimming together in the lake and watching the stars, until one day, Wolf is gone…

Forest School at Bladon, Fire Safety and Baked Apples

In their Forest School sessions this term Vela class have been working towards fire safety by making sparks and splitting wood. They have made fantastic progress, and with Christmas around the corner all sessions have been planned with a treat to enjoy before we break up for festivities.

The students added fuel to the fire independently and used tools to core their own apples and stuff them with treats. They then placed the apples on the fire themselves using fire safe gloves. This task was planned with the intention to leave the students feeling proud of what they have accomplished because there is a clear goal and process to achieve it. Students were encouraged to smell and taste ingredients to stimulate senses and promote healthy relationship with food. Eating the food at the end of the session is a wonderful way to securely end the session emotionally and physically.

The idea of eating together around the fire circle is to strengthen emotional development and embed sense of belonging. This roots back to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs… The students felt safe, secure and were provided with food, warmth and a task that allowed them to reach their full potential. This session actually meets all five areas on the pyramid of Maslow’s needs: Self actualisation, love and belonging, safety and security, psychological needs, it’s also great fun.
