This term, pupils have been making the most of Rowden’s beautiful outdoor spaces, taking learning beyond the classroom and into the woodland, allotment and play areas. Our environment continues to be an important part of school life, offering calm, sensory‑rich spaces where pupils can explore, develop new skills and enjoy experiences at their own pace.

Woodland walks have been a particular highlight. These regular sessions give pupils the chance to practise independence – from navigating uneven ground to following familiar routines and getting ready with the right clothing. Alongside this, outdoor play and sensory spaces have been used extensively throughout the term. These areas are ideal for building motor skills, developing body awareness and supporting emotional regulation. Pupils have been showing growing resilience as they climb, explore and try new movements, as well as enjoying the social side of outdoor play with staff and peers. These hands-on activities are brilliant for building engagement and supporting physical development.
What links all of these experiences is the calm, unpressured way pupils are able to explore their environment and learn from it. Outdoor activities naturally support communication, independence and wellbeing, and staff continue to use these opportunities to help pupils build the foundations they need for progress.
