Reading for Wellbeing: DEAR Week at Maple View School

At Maple View School, reading is recognised as an important part of both learning and wellbeing. Alongside supporting communication, reading can provide opportunities for relaxation, enjoyment and emotional development.

This week, the school has been embracing DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Week, an initiative designed to encourage pupils and staff to pause their usual activities and spend dedicated time enjoying books. The aim is to promote a love of reading while supporting calm moments throughout the day.

Pupils have been immersed in reading across a wide range of environments, with books brought into both familiar and creative spaces around the school. From classroom areas and reading nooks to forest school tents and corridors, reading has been integrated into all areas of school life.

DEAR Week has provided a valuable reminder that reading is not only a key learning skill, but also an activity that can support wellbeing, relaxation and a sense of enjoyment. By creating positive experiences around books, Maple View School continues to encourage pupils to develop confidence in their learning.
